The municipality of Tipitapa is home to more than 120,000 people, but you wouldn’t know it standing in the bleachers in the township’s only stadium. There, removed from the hustle and bustle of crowded streets and hectic markets, you can enjoy an afternoon breeze in the shade while boys and girls take their positions on a field of thick crabgrass.
For some, this is just a stadium. A place of leisure and entertainment. But the the boys and girls of The Academy of Sport, this is a place of hope and opportunity, discipline and teamwork.
The Academy of Sport was founded by Evelio Lopez, former player for the Nicaraguan national baseball team, and Rosa Lillian Gomez, a community activist, library owner and advocate for the empowerment of girls. Students in the academy are expected to maintain high academic standards and participate in community service projects. In return, they receive sport training, equipment and uniforms, and the opportunity to play in tournaments throughout the region.
